Internet Gambling Has Health Benefits According to Experts

Gambling experts Patrick Basham and Annie Duke told the Fox News’s reporter Stossel that internet gambling is a healthy activity for individuals and governments should stop using unsubstantiated anecdotal evidence to pass legislation against it. On the Fox New3s Show no anti-gambling activists would agree to appear on the show. Online gambling stirs up strong feelings for proponents and opponents. Proponents say that American citizens should be free to spend their money as they see fit. Opponents often cite ‘moral’ reasons and say that internet gambling would increase the number of gambling addicts.

Basham, a member of the conservative Cato institute and the author of the book ‘Gambling: A Healthy Bet’ stated “It’s healthy for the individual. It’s healthy for society. But you haven’t heard this narrative before, because all the research money goes to those who say: Look, society’s going to hell in a handbasket.” There is evidence that playing live or internet bingo helps to slow the onset of degenerative brain diseases like Alzheimer’s. Basham also said that evidence shows that .in general; gambling is good entertainment and recreation.

Basham said the government has not shown the public the results of a government funded study that shows a single difference gamblers and non-gamblers. The study showed that gamblers are “more sociable, more neighborly, more involved in their community, and are more likely to donate to charity.” When the subject of gambling comes up a discussion of gambling ‘addiction’ is sure to follow.

Basham believes the risks of gambling addiction have been overstated. Less than one percent of those that engage in any form of gambling develop a problem said Annie Duke, a former poker player who now lectures on decision making. Duke added that gambling addiction figures pale in comparison to the 7-9% of alcohol users who have a substance abuse problem. Duke stated “It’s a really, really small problem, but even if those people have problems they’re making those choices for themselves as consensual adults. They’re not hurting anybody, and I don’t think we’re supposed to legislate to protect a minority from their own bad decisions and hurt the majority who do it in a healthy way and who enjoy it in the same way they enjoy going to a restaurant or a movie.”

Basham added “Scare stories are everywhere. The real evidence shows that the extended problem is massively overstated, and critically we never hear about the positive side of gambling which is true and far outweighs the negative.” In the UK several studies have concluded that playing internet or live bingo benefits hand eye coordination and trains the memory. One credited the social aspect of bingo for greater longevity. Since gambling offers so many benefits it is hard to understand why some governments go to great lengths to ban it.
